Designer Take: Rebecca’s Ransom Note

Don’t worry – no one has been kidnapped! Our current technique challenge is to create a title or sub-title in a “ransom note” style. The Fresh Start kit features washi tape and patterned papers with various alphas that are perfect for trimming apart to create words. The challenge started last week with this layout, and I asked creative team member Rebecca to share with us her take on the challenge:

Rebecca enjoyed cutting apart patterned paper and using a few alpha stickers to create her title.

Her favorite part was the whimsical feel that the ransom note style title gave her layout, just like the whimsically layered squares in her design. It’s such a darling page!

There is still time to play along and we would love to see you join in! See the original challenge post here for all the details and prize information. Have a great day and good luck!

Designer’s choice: Almost monochromatic

Hello! It’s Jennifer Larson, sharing a page I made using a (mostly) monochromatic color scheme.

I love the word SHINE that came with the kit. I pulled the yellow paper from the kit to go with it, then selected white and grey neutrals to round out the scheme. Here’s the page:

I like that the grey grounds the page a bit and adds some depth to the page without being too dark. Plus, yellow and grey are a lovely combo. Here’s some details:

Some of the ephemera I had included peeks of other hues, mostly pink and orange. The green in the trim and on some embellishments are in honor of the play, the Frog Prince.

Finally, a gold sequin to dot the i.

Thank you for checking out my page! Even though this kit had some delicious color, it was fun to make an almost monochromatic page. I hope you play around with monochromatic color schemes the next time you take out your kit!

One Item Wonder: Seven Studio Icon Stickers

When I first laid eyes on the Seven Studio Icon Stickers from the Fresh Start kit, I instantly thought of my planner. They would be a great addition to to-do lists and schedules, wouldn’t they?

But I also thought they could be cute, trendy accents on a layout, too. I saved quite a few for my planner and chose several to add to this page about my little girl:

1 (1 of 1)

I love the metallic gold sheen of the stickers. The white background blends nicely with this Maggie Holmes patterned paper, yet the metallic icons stand out with the right amount of sparkle.

2 (1 of 1)

I thought the check mark made a great symbol for journaling. The heart repeats the heart in my title, the exclamation points are fun at the end of my title, and the arrow helps direct your eye to the important parts of the layout.

How have you put these cute and trendy stickers to use on your pages? We would love to see! Be sure to share with us on our Facebook page or tag us on instagram. Have a great day!

Introducing the Telephone Game Challenge

Hiya! I have a brand new challenge I’d like to introduce you to today. We’re calling it the Telephone Game Challenge and I’m kicking it of for 2016!

Do you remember being a kid and playing the telephone game? If not, let me explain. There’s a line of children. Someone whispers into the first kiddos ear, usually something funny. Then that kiddo whispers what they heard into a second kid’s ear. And then the second kid whispers into the third kid’s ear. But it’s whispered, so sometimes it doesn’t make sense or it gets garbled or mixed around. So by the time you get to the end of the line, the message sounds nothing like what was initially said.

We thought it would be fun to reinterpret that game as a scrapbook challenge! Every month someone will scrap lift the previous month’s layout. Taking the bits that inspire them the most and re-interpreting it with their own style. It will be interesting to see the difference between these two layouts. But it will be even more interesting to see the difference between the first layout and the sixth or the twelfth!

1601Jan-Anniversary00ONLINE

Here’s the layout I created to start the challenge off! I loved the Seven Paper numbers from the Shine Bright add-on. They were really the jumping off point for this page about an anniversary. It’s a fairly simple page but I think simple is good. Lots of room for interpretation =)

Next month, the lovely Jennifer Larsen will be sharing her iteration. I’m excited to see what she comes up with! You’ll have to check in next month as well, to see how this little challenge of ours progresses.

And if you decide to jump in on the game and scrap lift this page, please share it it with us! Either in the Scrapbook Circle Facebook Group or on Instagram. Just tag @scrapbook_circle or include the hashtag #scrapbookcircle

January Technique Challenge: Ransom Note

Inspired by the Seven Paper washi tape included in the Fresh Start kit, our technique challenge this month is to create a layout with a title or sub-title in “ransom note” style.

6 1200

The Seven Paper Clara paper and any of the alpha stickers in the kit and add-ons would be great for this challenge, too. I spread out my kit, chose photos, and went to work on the title first:

1 1200

Using scissors and sometimes tearing, I spelled out “Mom” and “Addie”. Based on the colors of those letters, I chose papers.

3 1200

I love the pink, yellow, green and gray combination. It feels fresh after the holiday color palettes I had been working with in December.

2 1200

I fussy-cut the butterfly and flower from the Basic Grey journaling cards paper in the kit. They coordinate perfectly with the colors I pulled from the washi tape for my title.

5 1200

Are you ready to play along? Here’s how:

1. Create a layout with a “ransom note” style title or sub-title. The Fresh Start kit is perfect for the challenge, but any materials will do. Traditional and hybrid layouts only, please.

2. Post your layout to your blog, a gallery, or our Facebook page.

3. Comment below with a direct link to your post.

My Favorite Embellishment Shape

Some people like flowers, some people love circles, I love stars! I love stars on layouts and cards. I love chipboard stars, star stickers and more. The Studio Calico vellum stars are awesome. I like how there are star outlines and filled in stars in the one pack and how there are multiple colors too! Stars are great for so many themes too. Having a boy I love that stars are not girly. I sprinkled them on this page:

rk sc jan2016-2I love how these stars tuck under and over the photos and patterned paper.

rk sc jan2016-40

Do you love stars or is there another embellishment or shape you like to use?

:) Rebecca

One Item Wonder: Wood Tags

The Fresh Start kit includes a set of four exclusive wooden tags:

IMG_0240

I love the trendy fonts and the sayings make great titles, subtitles and card sentiments. I especially love how two tags have the hole on the left, and the other two have a hole on the right. Creative team member Jennifer took advantage of that when she used two tags to frame the photo on this fantastic layout:

2 by Jennifer Larson ED

Jennifer found the tags easy to use with elements from both the main kit and the add-ons because of their natural wood finish.

How are you putting these adorable tags to use? We’d love to see! Be sure to share on the Scrapbook Circle Facebook page, or tag us on Instagram. Have a great day!

Take 2 | Inspired by Past Projects

Happy Monday everyone!  Jenni here today sharing my Take 2 project using a layout of mine that is from October 2014!  I used both the January main kit, “Fresh Start” and “Shine Bright” Add-On.  the After opening my January kit, I remembered using a similar polka dot bag that was included and I recreate the layout.

 CREATE happiness_SBC_Oct 2014 border

This yellow ombre paper was inspiring too. I didn’t want to cover up too much but cut it up into random rectangles to give it some texture and more interest.

me + you_SBC_Jan 2016 border

I printed out my photo in black and white to contrast all the color. I used the same over all design, one photo with lots of layers under it and embellishments around it.

The Fancy Pants pack of flair die cuts in the Add-On has this awesome light bulb that fit perfectly with the curve of my son’s hand in the photo.

A couple other tags and die cuts for my title and the projects was complete!

I love challenges like this that make me go back and look through previous projects.  Some of your best inspiration can come from yourself!  An important idea to remember as we all make a fresh start in 2016.

Share your Take 2 layouts or other projects on the Scrapbook Circle Facebook page with us and thanks for stopping by the blog today.  Have an amazing day!
