February Technique Challenge: Rub-ons

One of my favorite items in the Today is Beautiful kit is the package of rub-ons by My Mind’s Eye. Now, when it comes to rub-ons, it seems like scrapbookers either love them or hate them. Which side of that fence are you on? To encourage you to give them a second chance, or to give you a chance to show off your experience and skills, our February technique challenge is to use rub-ons. I asked our February guest designer, Jen Ritchie, and creative team member Valerie to share with us their take on the challenge.

Scrapbook Circle Rubons

In Jen’s own words, “Confession….normally I am not a rub on user, so when the team asked me to do a project focusing on rub-ons, I can honestly say I had a wee bit of anxiety. Rub-ons have come along way since the ones I used way back when and working with these amazing My Mind’s Eye rub-ons in the kit, I realized they have become more stickerish and so less likely for me to make a huge mess. They go on like butter and can even be layered over other layers without getting cracks.”

“I love that these ones in particular are a bit transparent. I played around with that idea, printing my photo on vellum and then layering the vellum heart (I was so tempted to hoard this) with the rub-ons.  I loved that this set had some big words which ended up great for my title.”

“A fun tip – when the rub on may not have been designed exactly how you would want it for your layout don’t be afraid to cut and paste. The set comes with the big word hello and the phrase lovin’ it. I couldn’t quite make a title that I felt was appropriate for my layout, so I ended up cutting the lovi from the lovin’ it and chopped off the bottom of the curly in the word play, flipped it and rubbed it on to make an e and crafted the word love instead! Worked like a charm! With rub ons this strong don’t be afraid to experiment.”

Great idea, Jen! Now, if you’re still a little wary of rub-ons or need a refresher, this tutorial from Valerie should put you at ease:

Rub on step by step-2

Trim out the image/word you’d like to use.

Rub on step by step-3

Apply by rubbing the image/word with a craft stick.

Rub on step by step-4

Gently lift the plastic sheet away from the rub-on, making sure that everything adhered properly.

Rub on step by step-5

The rub-ons lend a beautiful softness to Valerie’s layout. So pretty!

Rub on step by step-9

Okay, ready to play? Here’s how to join in on the challenge:

1. Create a layout using the technique of applying rub-ons. We would love to see a Scrapbook Circle kit in action, but any materials will do.

2. Post your layout to your blog, our Facebook page, or an online gallery. Copy and paste a direct link to your post into the comments on this post.

3. You have TWO WEEKS to play. Enter by 9:00 pm Pacific time on Wednesday, March 4th, to be eligible to win this fabulous Basic Grey Vivienne prize package!

Good luck and happy scrapping!
