October Guest Designer — Janet Perafan-Babar

This month we welcome Janet Perafan-Babar as our October Guest Designer.

Hi Scrapbook Circle Fans! My name is Janet and I am thrilled to be here as the October Guest Designer. I’ve been a subscriber here for almost three years now. LOVE the club, so this is a huge honor! A little about me: I am a NYC native, living in New Jersey 18 years now. Mommy to three children who mean the absolute world to me: Zayn (13), Jabran (11) and Rianna (9). I’ve always enjoyed card making as a young girl but it wasn’t until 2003 that my passion for paper crafting was reignited. My tastes and style has changed over the years. I started with simple cards here and there, then onto the traditional 12×12 layout, 8½x11 layout, and then digital layouts.

Right now I am primarily a card maker and my layouts are only 8×8. I love working with that size! I think I consider my style to be either clean/layered or shabby/elegant. It depends on my mood and product, but it’s always, always most definitely influenced by color. My designs have been published in Scrapbook Trends and other online magazines, I have worked as a designer on sketch and kit teams and currently own a color challenge site.

Three crazy facts about me: 1) I am a slow scrapper, I find it difficult to just wing it. I definitely always need to measure and plan. 2) I have never thrown out, purged, or disassembled a scrapbook kit since 2007, unless I killed the kit. 3) I have never used Gesso, gelatos, or a sewing machine on my projects. Isn’t that crazy?

Here is the first of many projects from Janet using the October kit, On This Day.

We also asked Janet to answer a few questions so we could get to know her a little better.

If you could spend a day scrapbooking/crafting with anyone (friend, online friend, celebrity, etc) who would it be and why?
Oh wow, just one person? Tough question, how do you choose? It would be so many different people for so many different reasons. I would love to sit with Jimmy Fallon, just because he is a total riot and we’d spend the whole day laughing. Then again, I have met and worked with so many wonderfully talented, beautiful people online and I think it would be really nice to finally meet them. I would also really love to sit with crafters like Janna Werner, Stephanie Bryan, Magda Mizera, Karola Witczak, or Lea Lawson and Debby Hughes — I admire their work tremendously and learning a thing or two from them would be awesome.

If you were designing a scrapbook collection, what ONE thing would you make sure was in that line and why?
Hmmm. Well, I make more cards than layouts with my kits, so I tend to think “cards.” So, I’d make sure the line would include a die cut packet filled with sentiments, images and sayings just for card making. Yeah, that’d be cool.

What does a perfect day of scrapbooking look like for you? Is it day or night? Music or quiet? Crop or alone? Etc…
I work from home, so a perfect day for me is of course, without interruptions — no phones, fax machines, paperwork, errands, chores…nada. But in my house, that’s almost impossible. So I usually come down to my studio at night, after the kids go to bed. If it’s too quiet, I think too much and if the TV is on, then I’m distracted. Both slow down my creative process, so for me, Pandora is best. I’m usually alone, never done the crop scene — though cropping on Skype sounds like fun. Recently, my daughter began taking an interest in card making, YAY! I reorganized my studio and gave her some space. She’s gets so excited to create with me, and I’m just as thrilled with her!
