Designer Take: Beach Travel Album

When I saw that our blog challenge this month was going to be to create a travel album, I instantly knew that that I wanted to play along. You can check out the travel mini album challenge here.

Last week our family took a long weekend vacation to the beach. I wanted to create the base of a travel album before my vacation so that it would be easy to add journaling and photos while on vacation.

The album started with the Heidi Swapp Color Magic file folders from the June add-on Go Somewhere. I trimmed the albums to 9″ high and then used mist to color the folders. The color magic products really do an amazing job taking beautiful and bright color.

I alternated file folder pages with pieces of patterned paper from the Field Notes Kit. I then added a lot of pieces from the Field Notes printable plus some of the stickers. Once all of the pages and file folders were laid out, I sewed them right down the middle with my sewing machine to hold everything together.

In addition to the Field Notes kit and Go Somewhere add-on, I used this washi tape from our shop and some of Elise Cripe’s Stamps. I’m loving those stamps and can’t wait to work them into more projects.

Don’t you love the bright yellow on this page? I used this Studio Calico Taxi mist on the file folder and then wiped the extra mist off with a paper towel. I misted the file folders on a slick mat where some of the mist seeped under the page. I liked that the mist colored the back sides of the folders too. I even rubbed the back of the file folders in the extra mist on the mat to add more color to the album.

Tip: If you don’t want the mist to seep onto the back side of the paper, set your folders on a couple of paper towels before misting. The towels will soak up the extra mist before it gets on the back of your page.

The little circles were perfect spots of adding bits of journaling.

Adding bits of the washi tape were a nice way to add some embellishment and color to the pages.

All of the photos for this album were taken with a Fuji Instax camera. The cool thing about this camera is that prints out the photos in a cute, small size (around 2″ by 3″) right when you take the photo. (It’s like a mini Poloroid camera.) This trip was the first time I used the camera and I loved it. The perfect thing about it for a travel journal is that the photos are printed and can be added to the album each day on the trip.

The great thing about taking the base of the album on my trip was that I came home with an album fill of photos. I’d planned on adding the journaling while on my trip, but it didn’t happen. I just took an hour once we were home and added in the journaling and the album was complete.

I hope you join us with our travel album challenge this month. Even if you aren’t leaving town, you could create a mini showcase your favorite places around your town or neighborhood.
